Non-violence in a violent world
Martha Young traveled to Afghanistan and Turkey as a teacher of English as a Second Language. Students in these war torn countries often missed class after violent attacks. The students in these classes were from different tribes and backgrounds making the tension in the classroom palatable. Non-violent communication turned out to be the remedy to that tension.
Young started teaching non-violent communication when violence limited students’ access to education. After attacks students from the tribe blamed for the attack would stay away from school. So Young added non-violent communication to the lesson plan and watched as it changed their lives.
She was amazed at the changes that took place in her students. They began to look each other in the eye, see each other as human beings; new dialogues took place. In this episode of Sisterhood of the Second Act, Young shares her experiences and how she plans to continue teaching non-violent communication now that she is back in the United States.
From Accounting to Painting
Cheryl Miller Lackey has always wanted to be an artists. Now in retirement she is living her dream. The retired Vice President of Finance owns a studio and gallery and has brushed more than 400 paintings since retiring.

Finally she could turn her full attention to her passion of painting. She brings her love of her rural upbringing to her art. Many of Lackey’s work relays her love of old barns, farm animals and landscapes.
Now she showcases her work and that of other talented artists in her Botetourt County, Virginia, art gallery. You will hear her story in this edition of Sisterhood of the Second Act.
