The Palliative Care Partnership of the Roanoke Valley’s mission is to be a catalyst for efforts that empower all people to plan and exercise their choices for quality palliative and end-of-life care. A death doula provides companionship, comfort, and guidance to those facing a terminal illness or death.

People plan graduation parties and other important life events, but they often have a difficult time making plans for how they want to spend the end of their lives.  The partnership has been working with healthcare professionals in Geriatric Training and Education as well as helping families with end-of-life planning since 2006.

Sharon Parker, Carilion Clinic Home Care and Hospice Clinical Program Manager and Lisa Vineyard, a chaplain with Good Samaritan Hospice are both members of the Palliative Care Partnership of Roanoke Valley.

Death Doula

Chances are you have heard of birth doulas and how they support the mother physically and emotionally throughout childbirth. Death doulas provide similar support helping families navigate this inevitable transition often leading to healing conversations between family members.

Death Doulas may sound like a progressive idea, but throughout history in many cultures they have provided spiritual, physical and emotional support and played a fundamental role in the transition to death.
