Public Health’s Longest Study
The United States Public Health Service Study of Untreated Syphilis in Negro Male is is the longest study in public health history that did not involve treatment. The government followed more than 600 African American men with syphilis. The study lasted 40 years. The men never agreed to be in a study and in most cases they did not know they had syphilis and were never treated even after penicillin became the accepted treatment.
Lillie Head is the president of the Voices for our Fathers Legacy Foundation. Descendants of the public health study started the organization in 2014. It connects descendants across generations. The Foundation also provides annual scholarships to descendants and educates the public about the study and matters of public health.
