In 2021 only 13.3% of law enforcement officers were women and a not even 3% of chiefs were women, that is according to “Gender Distribution of Full-Time U.S. Law Enforcement Employees 2021,” by Erin Duffin. Those numbers are no surprise to the women interviewed in this edition of Sisterhood of the Second Act. They are helping pave the way for the next generation of female law enforcement officers. Their hope is to inspire that next generation of women officers with their book, “Uncuffed Voices: Her Story is my Story.”

Uncuffed Voices

“Uncuffed Voices: Her Story My Story” tells the stories of 18 trailblazers. These are women who rose in the ranks of their respective police departments when very few women were wearing blue. The book is the brainchild of Chanel Dickerson. For most of her time as Assistant Chief in the DC Metropolitan Police Department Chief Chanel Dickerson was the highest ranking female officer.

When she retired, she started Chief Chanel Speaks to empower women to shed their self-limiting beliefs. Part of that mission included calling on her fellow women in blue to share their stories. Those stories make up “Uncuffed Voices.” And it has become an Amazon best selling anthology.

Dickerson and three of the other authors Sherry Johnson, Derrica Wilson and Angelica Robinson tell their stories on this edition of Sisterhood of the Second Act.
