A Survivors Story
As a realtor, Lenora Farrington has held dozens of open houses. In June of 2020, the open house she hosted near Smith Mountain Lake became a nightmare. Nothing seemed unusual at first, a man in his 30s was one of the visitors. He signed the registry and held a conversation with Lenora for more than 30 minutes.

She did find it unusual that he had a wrench in his back pocket. When she asked he mentioned that he was a plumber and always had tools on his person, a habit Lenora’s own father had. The man left only to return when the last visitor departed. If Lenora had not been a black belt, this story would have ended much differently.
Treating Trauma

The attack Lenora experienced that day was traumatic and left life long scars. Not all trauma is that overt. Licensed Clinical Social Worker Cyndi Richards says trauma is an individual experience. What might be traumatic for one person may not have an impact on another. She, like many other counselors, is seeing more demand for psychological services. She says trauma caused by the pandemic may be to blame. Even if you did not experience a loss of a loved one or have a serious illness, the pandemic still could have caused trauma to you or your loved ones. The isolation, uncertainty and the threat of illness is enough to have caused trauma. Cyndi also urges everyone not to minimize those feelings of loss, depression or anger. She says that will only push those feelings down which could lead to an eruption down the road.
